Kings vs. Grizzlies Preview – By the Numbers

January 29, 2024

The Kings head to Memphis to take on a version of the Grizzlies, who have a laundry list of players out tonight: Ja Morant, Steven Adams, Desmond Bane, Brandon Clarke, Luke Kennard, Derrick Rose, Marcus Smart, and Jake LaRavia have all been ruled out. Ziaire Williams and John Konchar are both doubtful, and Vince Williams Jr. is listed as questionable.

Even with all of the injuries of late, the Grizzlies are 3-1 in their last 4 games. As Kings fans know, never take any opponents for granted, even if they look depleted before the jump.

The main player to watch on the Grizzlies will be Jaren Jackson Jr. JJJ is averaging a career high 21.9 Points and 2.0 Assists, but his efficiency is way down with having to take on more responsibilities. He’s shooting 44.9% from the field and 32.1% from 3. Another area where he has struggled this season is on the boards, averaging just 5.7 Rebounds per game.

Domantas Sabonis is leading the league with 12.7 Rebounds per contest, giving the Kings a huge advantage coming into this game. In the first matchup against Memphis, Sabonis had 21 Rebounds. Don’t be surprised if he’s around the 20 board mark again tonight.

With so many players out for the Grizzlies, it’s hard to look at their team numbers and put stock in them for tonight. They will be playing young players who are trying to earn their way in the league. I assume they’ll play hard, and the Kings will have to be ready for that.

That officially makes the hustle stats the Swing Stat of the game. Offensive Rebounds, Deflections, Charges Drawn, etc. Don’t let this depleted team beat you by outworking you. The Kings have the huge advantage of skill and talent, but there are nights in the NBA where heart beats talent. Don’t let tonight be one of those nights.
